Helium Mobile Phone Plan: Everything You Need to Know

Looking for a budget-friendly mobile plan? Helium Mobile offers unlimited data, talk, and text for just $20 per month.

Developed by Nova Labs, Helium Mobile operates on a hybrid network that combines the nation's largest 5G infrastructure with the decentralized, user-powered Helium Network. This innovative approach enhances coverage while keeping costs low.

In this guide, we’ll explore how Helium Mobile works, its key features, and how users can support the network by contributing to decentralized coverage and receiving MOBILE tokens.

What Is the Helium Mobile Plan?

Helium Mobile is a low-cost mobile service that runs on the Helium Network, offering unlimited talk, text, and data for just $20 per month. Created by Nova Labs, it provides a more affordable option compared to major carriers by using a mix of traditional and decentralized network coverage.

Users can sign up for individual plans or join a group plan with up to eight people.

The average American family spends around $1,300 yearly on mobile services, according to a 2023 report by Dexo. The Helium Mobile phone plan is much more affordable than what traditional cell carriers charge. For example, unlimited plans from Nova Labs’ partner, T-Mobile, start at $60 monthly.

To keep plans affordable, Helium Mobile uses a shared data model. Speeds may slow down after 30GB of data usage in a month, but users can still stay connected.

The Helium Network is a decentralized system where people can set up hotspots to improve mobile coverage. Those who contribute may receive MOBILE tokens, which can be used to help pay for their service.

Initially, Helium Mobile launched a $5 plan in Miami as a pilot program and closed it on March 7, 2024.

Note: If you purchase the Google Pixel 8 Pro, it comes with a bonus: 12 months of free Helium Mobile service.

Helium Mobile Plan Features

Helium Mobile offers affordable mobile service with features designed to improve coverage, keep costs low, and give users more control over their network experience. Here’s what makes the plan unique:

Hybrid Coverage

Helium Mobile combines a major nationwide 5G network with the decentralized Helium Network to provide strong and reliable service in more places.

Discovery Mapping

Users can opt in to help improve the network by mapping coverage while they move. Those who participate may receive MOBILE tokens as a way to support their contributions.

MOBILE Store

The MOBILE Store allows users to apply MOBILE tokens toward their phone bills and other network-related expenses, reducing out-of-pocket costs.

Helium Mobile also includes additional benefits, like referral credits and options for expanding coverage with extra equipment.

Group Plans

Helium Mobile makes it easy to share savings with family and friends. Group plans allow up to eight people to join, helping everyone get unlimited service at a lower cost.

International Roaming

Frequent travelers can stay connected in over 200 countries. International roaming starts at $15 and provides calls, texts, and data access through the Helium Mobile app.

SecureAF

Helium Mobile is developing SecureAF, a security feature designed to prevent SIM swap attacks using advanced cryptographic protection.

How Does It Work?

Helium Mobile offers a low-cost wireless plan by combining a nationwide 5G network with the decentralized, user-powered Helium Network. What makes it different from traditional carriers is its use of blockchain technology and the ability for users to contribute to network coverage.

Getting started with Helium Mobile is simple:

  1. Registration: Visit the Helium Mobile website or download the Helium Mobile app to register.
  2. SIM Card: Order a SIM card through the app or use an eSIM if your device supports it.
  3. Activation: Insert the SIM card into your phone and follow the instructions in the app to activate your service.

For just $20 per month, Helium Mobile offers an unlimited plan that includes:

  • Unlimited data (speeds may slow after 30GB of usage)
  • Unlimited talk and text
  • The ability to participate in the network and receive MOBILE tokens

Users can enable the mapping function on their phones to earn MOBILE tokens. This feature allows the phone to help map the Helium Network's coverage.

  • Indoor Hotspot: Priced at $249, suitable for homes and buildings.
  • Outdoor Hotspot: Priced at $499, ideal for high-traffic areas and outdoor installations.

By setting up a hotspot, users help expand network coverage and support the Helium Mobile infrastructure. Those who participate may receive MOBILE tokens when their hotspots provide connectivity to the network.

Helium Mobile Coverage Tools

Two key tools in this effort are the Moken Explorer and the Helium Coverage Planner. Here's how they contribute to and benefit the Helium Mobile network:

1. Identifying Optimal Locations

The Coverage Planner helps users determine ideal hotspot placements by analyzing population density, existing coverage gaps, and network demand. This ensures hotspots are positioned where they can provide the most benefit to the network.

2. Maximizing Rewards

Using the Coverage Planner, hotspot owners can optimize their placement to enhance coverage in areas with limited connectivity. Hotspots in areas with higher network demand may contribute more effectively to the Helium ecosystem.

3. Community Coordination

The planner also helps coordinate hotspot distribution among users. By preventing over-saturation in some locations and filling coverage gaps in others, it supports a more efficient and balanced network.

Trying to switch servers. This is an option, but, apparently, the only communication available is texting and I’d like to speak to a human.

Just wondering if perhaps you would finance an outdoor hotspot. I am on a disability check and it’s pretty much not possible to pay out $500 at one whack. Maybe you could spread that amount over 2 or 3 payments?
